Are you looking for a basic recipe from the old days to use as your family birthday cake recipe? Keep this recipe nearby! I think it will become a favorite in your family! It has been a favorite of my daughter Megan's for 30 years!
Recipe:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
Prepare two 8 or 9 inch round cake pans, by using parchment paper cut into circles to fit in the bottom of your pans and then spray with your favorite non stick cooking spray.
!/2 cup butter, softened
1 and 3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3 egg whites, beaten, folded in
vanilla and almond extract to taste
3/4 cup milk
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the butter, sugar, water, egg whites, vanilla and almond and milk. Mix for about 2 minutes and then slowly add the dry ingredients and mix together until all are incorporated. Next, pour half the mixture into each of the two prepared pans. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean after being inserted into the center.
Remove both cakes from the pans onto a cooling rack and let them cool completely before frosting and decorating. I sometimes put them in the refrigerator overnight and frost the next day.
My beloved Great grandmother Caty made this cake for birthdays her whole life. This recipe dates back to the year 1902.
I hope you enjoy this special occasion cake as much as my family does! My daughter Megan says my birthday cakes are "lit!"
